Here are the essential items for a Boston Terrier owner's library! Some of the best Boston books are out of print, but you can still buy them used in very good condition easily from Amazon. Over the years, we have purchased many books in hopes of learning lots about Boston Terriers and their related health, breeding and training questions. Unfortunately, we have wasted a lot of money on books that promise to deliver, but do not. There are a lot of dog books out there. Most of them are sub-par at best. What we have here are the "cream of the crop", the ones that have risen to the top of the piles, ones we refer to regularly, and are the only ones we have found useful in all our years. We have weeded out the bad ones for you! We hope you enjoy browsing this special collection.

Boston Book

Boston Terriers: The Early Years
(Click above to order)

by Cathy J. Flamholtz (Editor)

A very wonderful book, this covers the early history of the Boston Terrier only through the 1920's. There are great early illustrations and hard to find artwork never seen before, this book is actually a compilation of early writings of Dr. Varnum Mott, Edward Axtell, Alva Rosenberg and others. It also has a listing of all Boston Terrier champions from when the breed was recognized to Aug. 1927, a catalog reproduction from the first annual "Boston terrier Breeders Club" dog show Nov. 1898, and a listing of "reliable breeders of Boston Terriers" from that period. It is the most complete source of information on the founding of the Boston Terrier breed, and is filled with lots of great photos and illustrations. Another "must" for Boston fanciers!

NOTE: Amazon shows this book as being not yet published, which is incorrect - I spoke with Amazon, and they said this was a mistake, and that it WILL be corrected - you may still place an order for the book even if this note has not been changed yet.

Boston Book

Boston Terriers : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training
(Click above to order)

by Susan Bulanda, Michele Earle-Bridges

A very good book for those just starting to learn about the breed, it will help you to know whether the breed is right for you or not. Has a very good section on how you finding a responsible breeder, and unlike many less expensive breed paperbacks, this one seems to really tailor the info here to the Boston breed. Many others just throw in some breed pictures and use general text to discuss the health, training, etc. This one does not do this, and that is one thing I like about this informative & inexpensive book.

Boston Book

Boston Terriers
(Click above to order)

by Mrs. Charles D. Cline

A basic book on the breed, it contains very new as well as old photos from this series of books that has been around for many years. It has a combination of Boston info and general dog info, and it is hardcover. Also covers products (toys etc) that are made by the book company that are (in my opinion) the best and most indestructible for Bostons. Another inexpensive book for people wanting to learn about the basics, a good companion to Susan Bulanda's book above.

Boston Book

Guide to Owning a Boston Terrier
(Click above to order)

by Jacqueline F. O'Neil

The third in the "basic" books on the breed, I have not yet been able to review this one, but I have friends who have many of their dogs pictured in this one, so it should have some very nice show quality Bostons in it!

Is A Boston The Right Breed For Me?

I get many people writing asking if they think a Boston would be the right breed for their family situation. Many times the answer is unfortunately no.
Which breed is best for us they ask? Below you will find my 2 favorite books on picking the right breed.

Choosing a Dog: A Guide to Picking the Perfect Breed
(Click above to order)

by Nancy Baer & Steven Duno

I always point people questioning me as to which breed is best for them to this book - it is the ONLY book I have ever read on different breeds that ACTUALLY TELLS THE TRUTH WITH ACCURACY about the negative aspects of all the breeds. If you are undecided about which breed is best for you, this is one of the BEST books I recommend. I refer to it time & time again!

How to Housebreak Your Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are not always known for their "ease" of housebreaking, but the book below helps put things into a clearer perspective!

How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days
(Click above to order)

by Shirlee Kalstone

While "7 days" is a bit much to claim in regards to a Boston, this book has been around a long time and never goes out of print for a good reason - it's still the best book on the subject! I give out copies to new puppy owners, and even refer to it myself. It covers not only standard puppy housebreaking, but re-training problem adults too. It gives housebreaking time schedules for homes that work as well as for people who are home all day. It explains the importance of deodorizing accidents and ways of providing corrections when accidents do happen. It's a fast read, and an inexpensive book - everyone needs this one!

Helping Medical Problems In Your Boston Terrier

Bostons have their own set of health problems, and the books below have helped me tremendously over the years
to understand and treat these problems. No Boston owner should be without these!

Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook
(Click above to order)

by Debra M. Eldredge, Liisa D. Carlson DVM, Delbert G. Carlson DVM, James M. Giffin MD

This is the bible of canine veterinary manuals. It is the best and most complete handbook, and don't be surprised if you wear the cover off the same way I did when you own this book! Covers all body systems and provides answers to common and uncommon conditions. If you were to buy only 1 book on health/illness, this would be the one I would recommend.

Just What the Doctor Ordered : A Complete Guide to Drugs and Medications for Your Dog
(Click above to order)

by Drs. Race Foster, Marty Smith

This is a great book that fills an important missing niche: the descriptions and discussions of all medications used in dogs. It covers all body systems and their associated problems, describing in detail the meds used to treat them. Also gives dosages for most of them. Few if any books give detailed drug info the way this one does. I use this to double check medication info I get from my own vet and sometimes to even suggest medications he may not have thought of in treating my dogs.

Pet Allergies
(Click above to order)

by Alfred J. Plechner DVM & Martin Zucker

An oldie but a goodie and well worth finding used. I can't tell you how much knowledge I have gained from this little, inexpensive book. I can even say I know the doctor who wrote it, as I consulted with him years ago. Dr. Plechner is a wonderful doctor and is a walking encyclopedia on allergy problems. He is located in Los Angeles, and has treated many "dogs of the stars"! His explanation of allergies is very realistic with no beating around the bush. He describes in detail everything about the adrenal glands and thyroid and what goes wrong with them causing allergy related problems in breeds prone to this (like Bostons, Bulldogs, Frenchies). He gives recommendations for exact blood testing that needs to be done to diagnose allergic conditions (which you can take to your own vet) and the treatment options available. I can't believe he has packed so much USEFUL information into such a small book. I have reread it many times! He also covers natural diets and the importance nutrition can play in food allergies. No other books on allergies have contained as much good info as this one. Boston with allergies? You need this book!

Natural Healthcare And Feeding Of Your Boston Terrier

Many Boston owners are realizing the benefits of natural, non-commercial dog foods and herbal medicines to treat
them when they are sick. Here are some of my favorite books on the subject.

Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats
(Click above to order)

by Richard H. Pitcairn, Susan Hubble Pitcairn, Michael W. Fox

The classic natural pet care book from two celebrated veterinary specialists in chemical-free nutrition, treatment, and natural healing for pets, Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats offers valuable natural and holistic advice on a host of pet topics, including, but not limited to, diet, exercise, environment, coping with a pet's death, and how to care for a sick animal. In addition to their thorough discussion of the above, Richard Pitcairn, D.V.M., and his wife, Susan Hubble Pitcairn, M.S., offer a comprehensive "quick reference" section on animal illnesses, organized alphabetically and including a brief description of each illness, preventative measures that may be taken, and holistic and natural treatment options for both dogs and cats. Line drawings, informative graphs, and the Pitcairn's intelligent prose make this guide a must-have for pet owners interested in a natural lifestyle for their pets. One of the strongest points of the book is it's recipes for cooking natural foods for your dog.

The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog
(Click above to order)

by Wendy Volhard, Kerry L. Brown DVM

Available as Kindle, hardcover or paperback. This is a book on Holistic medicine with a scientific approach. I really like the way the authors break down all the nutrients in food (amino acids, fats and preservatives, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, water & enzymes) and do a detailed analysis of each including what deficiencies in each can cause, what each thing does, and what the importance of each is. This is the ONLY book I have ever seen that covers this so thoroughly. It also covers allergies, toxins, vaccines, every detail of the digestive tract, thyroid problems, kinesiology, herbs, chiropractic, Iridology, the importance of light and homeopathy. My favorite chapter is "Laboratory Tests - What Do They Tell?" This covers all lab tests, what they are for, what increased/decreased blood levels mean in terms of disease, and what all the normal values for them! Again, the only book I have ever seen to cover this subject. It also lists resources where you can buy many of the remedies and products used to treat dogs holistically. What I like is that it isn't a "hokey" natural healthcare handbook, but a sensible and useful one. It is a very complete book, with much more detail that I have room for here!

The Complete Herbal Handbook for the Dog and Cat
(Click above to order)

by Juliette De Bairacli Levy

This book was the original work done on herbals for animals and it has never been out of print! It was written in the early 70's and continues to sell today. This author takes what some might call an "extreme" view when it comes to natural foods and treatments. In any case, it is a very engaging read, and I learned a lot about wild dogs and what their natural behaviors consist of, which I applied to my thinking of our own domesticated dogs. This is a book for the purist (or the wanna-be purist) who is interesting in learning all the most fundamental details of herbal and natural feeding and treatments. This book might be considered by some to be more academic than practical, but still it is a worthwhile book to learn the basics of a natural diet.

Dog Showing: An Owner's Guide
(Click above to order)

by Connie Vanacore

Dreaming of dog-show greatness? Check out Connie Vanacore's Dog Showing: An Owner's Guide. With more than 1,800,000 dogs exhibiting in some 4,500 dog shows yearly in the United States alone, sound training and preparation goes a long way in separating the winners from the losers. Packed with loads of useful information on getting started in the sport--such as picking the right dog for you, grooming and training a show dog, preparing for the show ring, and sportsmanship--Vanacore's advice, coupled with helpful black-and-white photographs, is the perfect primer for the soon-to-be king, or queen, of the ring. Another book that has been recommended to me, it pictures great Terrier handler Clay Coady at Westinster showing a Standar Schnauzer on the cover.
